Sometimes it isn't the number of people you put in the seats but more importantly the number of people you touch with your performance. That is exactly what the 2007 Sagebrush Cowboy Roundup accomeekend in Sheridan, Wyoming on Feb. 9-10, 2007. The Evening Feature Performance at the Wyo Theater did not pack the house but those that attended were in agreement that the two feature entertainers, TJ Casey and Ken Overcast did more than a great job of keeping their audience entertained. The annual Shoot-Out award was given to newcomer David Kuzara of Sheridan, Wyoming with his new poem "Bad Apple". The poem is about a horse purchased in spite of warnings against it and incorporated the shoot-out line "bad company corrupts good character" to prove that it only takes one bad apple or in this case horse to ruin a herd. David says he couldn't sleep the night before the contest for thinking of poems all night long and worrying that he wouldn't be able to come up with a poem. He was the third place winner of the contest in 2006 and was determined to do better this year. The Wyo Theater resounded with the rhymin' phrases of up and coming cowboy poet kids from area schools. Props, parents and teachers spurred the cowboy kidz to perform their poems to a panel of three judges in an effort to achieve the Champion or Reserve Champion Poem and Performer awards sponsored by the Sagebrush Cowboyography Association. This year's top honors for both the Champion Poem and Performer went to Keely Rockafellow. Keely has been on the Wyo Theater stage as a champion or reserve champion several times over the course of the past 5 years. Her 2007 winning poem is about an old barn on her family's ranch an is aptly called "Our Old Barn". The Reserve Champion Poem award was given to Lena Frappier. Her poem was a tribute to the memory of her dad and touched the hearts and souls of everyone in the audience. The Reserve Champion Performer award was presented to Bryce Burnell when he recited his poem "Head to Head" which relates how he got a broken nose when he was at a WJRA Rodeo and his nose connected with the top of a his steer's head. The annual Scot Redington Award, a beautiful and tooled leather and hide notebook cover made by local cowboy poet and saddlemaker, Charlie Cook of Sheridan, Wyoming was presented to Ranchester cowboy poet Mick Kaser. Mick and his wife Holly previously of Riverton now live and ranch near Ranchester. Mick, who has been performing his cowboy poetry for years was active helping to put on a long running Cowboy Poetry Gather in Riverton, Wyoming and is now helping to produce the Sagebrush Cowboy Roundup. The reserve champion poem award was presented to Lena Frappier. |
